Carol Bove and Emily Pethick
During my period of programming at Cubitt a number of the projects were engaged in thinking around the gallery’s position as an artist run space, and in relating this to different notions of self-organisation. I was also interested in linking this to a variety of practices and ideas that artists are working with today as well as tracing these ideas back to historical cases, such as those that grew out of the liberation movements of the 1960s and 1970s, such as in the exhibition Hey Production!, which was staged in two of Victor Papanek and Charles Henessey’s living cubes, repurposed as exhibition structures by artist Florian Pumhosl, and the exhibition The Joy of Sex with work by Carol Bove and a selection of Charles Raymond’s original watercolour illustrations for Alex Comfort’s pioneering 1972 publication of the same title.
Carol Bove is an artist who is similarly interested in tracing the social, political, and artistic movements of the 1960s and 1970s, in particular looking at how these were expressed in aesthetic form. Conjuring a powerful sense of the genesis of grass roots movements through displays of books and objects, delicate drawings, and collages, the combination of Bove’s works and Raymond’s drawings revisited a moment in history that challenged established lifestyles, attitudes, morals, and changed the cultural landscape, creating a poignant moment of reflection on where we have gone from there.
