Cubitt Community Distribution Centre brings together material from the Cubitt Community Press and Cubitt Community Radio alongside archival material from historic independent press, radio and community-led projects rooted in Islington.

The exhibition marks the beginning of a three-year programme of the Cubitt Community Distribution Centre: a new project that brings together print and radio as shared resources for communities in Islington. Cubitt is exploring how press and broadcast can support local organising, creative resistance, and collective storytelling. We believe in owning the tools of creation and using them to make things happen in and for our communities.

In a borough shaped by a history of community action, our inspiration for this programme has been the historic radio and print projects that fought for Islington to remain liveable, welcoming and shaped by the people who live here. This countered the gentrification of the borough, which has continued from the 1960s to today. As communities across Islington, London, and beyond face gentrification, displacement, and cultural erasure, we’re turning to civic infrastructure to practice ways of being, organising, and making together.

Opening event to be announced in March/April 2026.

This display includes material from:
The Islington Gutter Press, a socialist newspaper created by feminists, squatters and Islington residents between 1972–1985. For a period of time, the Gutter Press was printed at Community Press - a community print shop located on St Pauls Rd.

Islington Bus Company, a collectively run resource and print centre with a multi-purpose double-decker bus, active between 1972 and 1988. Alongside this, they also hosted the Islington Radio Project, upskilling locals in radio broadcast production.

Prints from Cubitt Community Press and Cubitt Community Radio, made by community members and local organisations during workshops or open studios between July 2025 and January 2026.
