In this eight day workshop, a group of Islington-based 13-19 year olds developed their ideas and made work alongside artist-filmmaker Beverley Bennett and Cubitt’s Education team. Through dialogue, collage, placard-making, curation and film, young people explored their individual and collective experiences of the past, present and future. What were school, home and socialising like before lockdown? What was happening in the world? What are we angry about now? What's at stake for our future?

The workshop was joined by guest tutors from Central St Martin’s, University of the Arts London. The group worked towards an Arts Award Bronze, a national qualification in the arts.

"I loved being able to interact with other teenagers and getting to explore my creative side."

"I enjoyed being free to create my own art."

"I learnt there is more to art than what you see. I enjoyed the protest and the life experience I gained. It was a great experience.”

"I learnt how to express myself and collaborate with people I don't know very well.”

The project took place in August 2020 and was hosted by Lift Youth Hub.

Institute of Anything is Cubitt's programme for 13-19 year olds. Young people work alongside contemporary artists, develop skills and make friends. It’s called Institute of Anything because anything is possible. We support young people to take their art practice in new directions.

This project was commissioned as part of Islington's Summerversity and Launchpad programme, and is supported by Islington Council.
