Haegue Yang: Trustworthy Clown IV

Haegue Yang and Bart van der Heide

In her displays, Berlin based artist Haegue Yang (Seoul, 1971) assumes an engaging position between narration and abstraction. Yang’s pallet of Venetian blinds, floodlights, mirrors and scent machines represent a set of private associations, yet when they are installed the artist remains illusive as ‘meaning giver’. Instead, her installations seem to rely on their encounter with the visitor, who’s engagement is stimulated – intellectually and physically – through the use of material, light, scent and movement.

The Cubitt program 2007-2009 featured solo exhibitions that individually explored a practise of narration and in particular its interaction with display. The installation ‘Lethal Love’ that Yang developed for Cubitt in early 2008, was part of a series of portraits that she developed throughout 2007 and 2008 at venues such as Hamburger Kunstverein, Portikus Frankfurt, Sala Rekalde (Bilbao) and California Institute of the Arts/REDCAT (Los Angeles). For each venue Yang developed architectural ‘portraits’, inspired by infamous public personas in Asian and European history. The installation at Cubitt took its cue from the life of German activist and politician Petra Kelly.
