Ruth Noack & Vivian Ziherl in conversation

Thursday 26 September 2013, 7pm

A launch event for ‘The Lip Anthology’, a new publication edited by Vivian Ziherl, who will introduce her research in discussion with curator and art historian Ruth Noack.

Lip magazine was self-published by women in Melbourne from 1976 to 1984 , and stood as a lightning rod for Australian feminist artistic practice over the Women’s Liberation era. The art and ideas expressed over Lip’s lifetime track with groundbreaking moves into performance, ecology, social-engagement and labor politics; all at an intersection with localised contexts. Collecting and presenting the materials of Lip for the first time since their original appearance, ‘The Lip Anthology’ foregrounds the range and dynamism of contesting feminisms that comprised the Lip project. Selected interviews, artist-pages, essays and activist reports are re-produced in facsimile, preserving Lip’s graphic experimentation.

Vivian Ziherl is a curator at If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want to Be Part Of Your Revolution, Amsterdam, as well as undertaking independent projects, research and writing. Recent projects include Landings (2013-14) – a research project co-curated with Natasha Ginwala that seeks cross-over readings of land history, geomorphology, rurality and corporeality; and StageIt! (2012-13), a performance series co-curated with Hendrik Folkerts at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Ziherl will be the seventh guest curator invited to the David Roberts Art Foundation ‘Curator Series’ for 2014.

Ruth Noack is a Berlin-based art historian, lecturer, writer, and curator. Noack was curator of documenta 12 (2007). Amongst the shows she curated with Roger M. Buergel were Scenes of a Theory (1995), Things we don’t understand (2000), Organisational Forms (2002–03) and The Government (2005). Noack has also authored monographs on the work of Eva Hesse, Alejandra Riera, Danica Dakic, Ines Doujak and Mary Kelly. Her book on Sanja Ivekovic’s work Triangle was published earlier this year by Afterall.

‘The Lip Anthology’ is published by Kunstverein Publishing and Macmillan Art Publishing, co-produced with Grazer Kunstverein and with the support of the Australia Council for the Arts and the TEWRR.

This event is staged in cooperation with independent bookshop and project space X Marks the Bökship, where ‘The Lip Anthology’ can be purchased.
