Spring Ball 2013: The Cake Museum

This year’s Spring Ball once again featured the Cake Museum; real life local heritage explored through cakes, recipes and personal histories.

In preparation Cubitt Education hosted a series of events.

Special workshops were hosted by artist and illustrator Emily Rand at which participants could come along and share recipes, learn about the history of cakes, and help develop the magnificent Cake Museum for the Spring Ball 2013! Workshops took place on:

And on the day before the Spring Ball there was an opportunity to create some tasty exhibits from scratch.

The Spring Ball 2013: Songs of Innocence and of Experience

On Monday 27th May Cubitt Education presented our fourth annual Spring Ball – a contemporary tea dance and multi-media extravaganza exploring the power of the written and spoken word through the visual arts. It took place at Islington Assembly Hall and was well attended by local older people from across the borough.

This year we took our inspiration from William Blake’s ‘Songs of Innocence and Experience’ which provided the starting point for a variety of collaborative and individual works ranging from animation to poetry to choreography. An exhibition of visual work by members of several different art classes was also displayed in a vibrant exhibition in the entrance foyers.

After the tea dance which took place from 7 until 8 there followed by a short interval before a showcase of new visual, performance and sound works created collaboratively by local older people, artists and young people; with dance pieces ranging from Disco to Musical to Line Dancing. Meanwhile Charlene ran the Cake Museum; real life (edible!) local heritage explored through cakes, recipes and personal histories. This was a huge success and thanks to the skills of our superb bakers raised over £100 for Cubitt Education projects. Artist John Close also led a live life drawing workshop on stage leading a group of artists captured the energy of the event superbly.

The event, led by the local older community, celebrated the wisdom, creativity and inspiration of our elders. We look forward to next year’s!
