Opening Event: Tuesday 16th July 2013

6.00-9.00pm

From a young age, our thoughts or plans about the future often include the word ‘someday’. “Someday I’ll have kids”, “Someday I’ll be rich and famous”, “Someday I will be telling this story to my grandchildren”… For many of us this day has already arrived. It is today.

On 16th July Cubitt Education launched the official opening of our summer exhibition Someday is Today, which featured over 130 works by 77 artists, the majority of whom have never shown their work in public before.  The works ranged from seascapes to political commentary, from fantastical to autobiographical, and were presented in a variety of mediums including traditional oil, watercolour, textiles, photography, drawing and chinese brushwork.

This summer exhibition, which ran from 16th – 28th July was a major event within our ongoing regular programme of high quality art workshops for local older people, particularly those most in need.  The works were testament to the breadth and depth of local creative talent and celebrated the rich and diverse artistic skills of an older generation as well as highlighting the depth of hidden creative activity within Islington. Many of you joined us and the featured artists here at Cubitt Gallery for the opening event to celebrate what was, for many of them, their first ever public exhibition.

The exhibition was organised in partnership with:

  • Hornsey Lane Estate Community Centre
  • St Luke’s Community Centre
  • The Peel Institute
  • Claremont Project
  • Sotheby Mews
  • Drovers Centre
  • Islington Chinese Association
  • Manor Gardens Welfare Trust
  • Arachne Greek Cypriot Women’s Group

Cubitt’s programme for older people is supported by the Baring Foundation, the Monument Trust, Islington Council and Arts Council, England.
