CUBITT FUNDRAISER AT CAFE OTO

Cubitt takes over Cafe OTO for a night of live cèilidh music, dancing, poetry, DJs and a fundraising raffle, helping the artist-run organisation secure a new permanent home.

A cèilidh is a social evening and cultural celebration common in Gaelic cultures, built around live music, group dancing and a caller guiding everyone through the steps. You do not need to know the dances in advance, and kilts are warmly encouraged but entirely optional.

At the centre of the night is a one-off cèilidh band assembled by friends and members of Shovel Dance Collective, with Cubitt Director of Programmes Seán Elder as fear an taighe, or master of ceremonies, and caller for the dancers. Cubitt artists, staff, friends and supporters will also contribute poetry readings and prizes for the fundraising raffle.

On the decks, raregr00ve is the DJ and broadcasting project of Andi Amirshah, founder of Cubitt Community Radio, a grassroots platform for local voices, independent music, live sets and discussion. Caprice Sühñ joins with nostalgic house, Bollywood and UK Desi sounds, queer club music, disco and 1990s and 2000s pop.

Founded by artists in 1991, Cubitt is one of London’s oldest artist-run cooperatives. For thirty-five years it has provided affordable studios, a non-profit gallery and an education programme, while supporting artists and curators at formative stages in their careers. Its work also reaches beyond the building through long-running projects with young people, schools, older residents and communities across Islington.

After twenty-five years at Angel Mews, Cubitt is now working to secure a new home from which this work can continue. The cèilidh is both a celebration of what Cubitt has built and a practical way to help carry it into its next chapter.
