Cubitt Seniors Art School kick off creative preparations for our Spring Ball 2014

Members of Cubitt Seniors Art School at Claremont Project worked with their tutor Darren Marshall to produce these surreal ‘consequence’ drawings as the first session in the build up to our annual Spring Ball.

2014’s Spring Ball is our fifth annual Spring Ball and will take place in May as part of the wider Word Festival funded by Islington Council.

Our theme is ‘Literary Nonsense’, using the surreal, comedic and nonsensical works of Spike Milligan, Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll as inspiration for a whole range of exciting exhibitions, performances, poetry, writing, workshops and publications from local people over 55 in this multi-disciplinary creative contemporary tea dance.

We will be working on this theme across our Elders programme, so watch this space for upcoming surreal events and updates!

Claremont Creates

Wednesday 12 September 2007 to Sunday 16 September 2007

Claremont Creates is an exhibition of work produced by Islington Residents over 55. Cubitt is proud to display their work to the public for the first time. All the exhibitors are regular members of Claremont Centre, adjacent to Cubitt studios.

Cubitt and Claremont have been working in partnership for the past year through the Inside Art project which has been run by Jane Simpson and Sarah Pickstone, two artists based at Cubitt. The monthly sessions have seen Claremont members visiting Cubitt and working alongside the artists in their studios. Some of the work on display comes out of these sessions, whilst others are works that the participants have made at home in their own time.

This is the first in a series of exhibitions showcasing work produced by local groups who wouldn’t normally have access to a public gallery.

Cubitt’s Christmas Festival x Claremont Creates Exhibition

Thursday 11 December 2008 to Sunday 11 January 2009

Since 2006 Cubitt Education has developed a close partnership with Claremont Project, a local day activity centre for over-55’s.  We have been running weekly art workshops on different skills at the centre — from clay modelling to textiles, and monthly drawing sessions for Claremont members in Cubitt studios with tea and cake (Inside Art).

On Thursday the 11th of December Cubitt Education opened an exhibition of oil paintings created during a recent six-week course at Claremont Project, with an accompanying Christmas festival including:

  • A book launch for ‘Forty Days of Bullseyes’ by Deirdre Weir, a regular to Cubitt’s art classes — “A poignant and funny memoir of a childhood in Dublin.”
  • Another art workshop regular, Maggi Adams AKA The Phat Controller, will be spinning Christmas tunes, and 70’s RnB, with her Wheelybag DJ contraption.
  • Everybody’s A Superhero — Drawings and photographs from a series of workshops, run by Cubitt Education for mentoring partnerships from Chance UK.
  • A sale of Christmas gifts made with Canonbury Primary School: as part of Everybody Draw.
  • The launch of the Everybody Draw Cotton Bags, in three wonderful designs, all by primary school pupils. (pictured below).  These bags are only £3 each and all profits go to Everybody Draw.

And of course, wine and mince pies!

The joint exhibition of Dreams and Mysteries and Everybody’s a Superhero continued in the Education Studio until the 11th of January 2009.

Get Green, Get Creative, Green Fayre at Claremont Project

Thursday 17 September 2009

The ‘Get Green, Get Creative’ Green Fayre is a one-day event at Claremont Project (an arts and personal development centre for people aged 55+) that seeks to help us answer these questions. During the afternoon visitors will be invited to participate in arts activities and learn about new ways to be ‘green’: exploring the links between creativity and sustainability.

The day will feature talks from:

  • Andrew Ford from Islington Council’s Green Living Centre
  • Transition Towns: Tom Hitchman will talk about this growing movement, which seeks to inspire community groups to develop ways in which we can all respond to the challenges, and opportunities, of Peak Oil and Climate Change.
  • Islington TimeBank Networks: a national movement inspiring a new generation of people to volunteer in their communities.
  • London Foragers: Tom Parkinson and Roland Phillips will introduce their ‘urban foraging’ methods, inspiring us to create nettle pesto and elderflower champagne: opening our eyes to the crops available to the Londoner, almost all year round.
  • Capital Growth: Seb Mayfield will talk about how Capital Growth aims to support 2,012 new community food growing spaces in London, by 2012.

Talks will be followed by a series of artistic and creative workshops and stalls, designed to mix sustainable thinking with imaginative activities:

  • Recycled Writing: recycle words, poems, metaphors and stories in this interactive installation.
  • Urban Foraging: Learn about finding and cooking the fresh, healthy wild foods we all have on our doorsteps.
  • Recycled Images and Materials: Recycle images and mix landscapes with portraits, new worlds with old, and explore urban and rural themes through creative collage with artist Darren Marshall.
  • Crafty Skills-Sharing:  Share thrifty skills and ‘make-or-remake’ with crafty enthusiasts young and old.
  • Energy Saving Surgery: Speak to an energy expert on how to save and conserve energy and resources in your own home and daily life.

The event is free, and will run from 1-4pm at Claremont Project, 24-27 White Lion Street, London N1 9PD
