Join us at the community view of Marlene Smith's new show at Cubitt Gallery - Ah, Sugar 

You’re invited to the community view of Ah, Sugar, a new exhibition by Marlene Smith at Cubitt Gallery!

This exhibition brings together a brand new series of works by Marlene, blending photography and sculpture in a way that explores how everyday objects tell stories and how family histories shape us. This exhibition explores the artist's interest in different materials: from metal to sugar, and the bodily qualities of artistic practice. We hope you join us to see the exhibition, everyone is welcome! 

In the exhibition, you will see a series of photographs made with friend and long-time collaborator Ajamu, alongside sugar sculptures imprinted using inherited family materials and textiles. Through this work, Marlene reflects on how our family histories are cyclical and entangled in the everyday. Each sculpture is displayed on metal plinths around the gallery, created to be the height of different household objects. 

We will be serving a warm lunch from 13:00 - 14:00, followed by an introduction to the exhibition by the curator and other creative activities onsite. Food will be first come, first served so please arrive early!

Activities: 

We will be hosting drop-in activities which you can take part in during the day, these will be short and easy to do in between 15 - 30 minutes (or more if you’d like!). They will be appropriate for all ages.

SUGAR + CLAY CASTING: Learning from what we see in the exhibition we will try to cast different objects and textiles onto clay and sugar to make our own sculptures. Learn this fun new art technique used by the artist in the exhibition.   

PHOTOGRAPHY: Taking inspiration from the photographs on show, using polaroids we will create our own portraits, focusing on how sculpture, textile and different parts of our bodies can create different shapes on film.
