Screening & Conversation: Saturday 27 April 2002, 7:00PM to 9:00PM

Filmmaker Chris Petit will be introducing a screening of his films Negative Space (1999) and Dead TV (1999). In collaboration with the launch of Afterall Issue 5. Following the screening Chris Petit is in conversation with Mark Lewis, artist and co-editor of Afterall.

Truth and invention, real lives and fiction become indistinct and equal elements, merging with other people’s work in the found-footage style, to create a single fabric of random spontaneous expressiveness, not unlike the life that slides by in front of a shop video camera. Each piece of film presents a clue to an inextricable tangle to which everything in the world is connected in its spider web of time, space and chance.

Chris Petit is a filmmaker, writer and film critic. His films include Radio On, (35mm, 102min, 1979); An Unsuitable Job for a Woman, (35mm, 91min, 1981); the collaborative works with Iain Sinclair, are The Falconer, (hi-8, 8mm, 55min, 1998 and Asylum, (DV Tape, 8mm, 56min, 2000). Petit has published novels since 1994 among them Robinson, (Granta, UK 2001); The Hard Shoulder, (Granta, UK, 2001) and The Human Pool, (Scibners, 2002).

Chris Petit is featured in Issue 5 of Afterall — A Journal of Art, Context and Enquiry, with texts by Laura Mulvey and Serafino Murri. This issue also features Anri Sala, Mary Heilmann, Barbara Kruger and Pawel Althamer.
