Gustav Metzger, who invented the concept of auto-destructive art, discusses Project Stockholm, June (Phase 1) in the context of his wider practice and thinking on humans’ destructive tendencies and environmental issues. Project Stockholm, June (Phase 1) is a model of an environment visibly being filled up with pollution. 120 cars with motors running surround a clear rectangular structure, emitting their exhaust fumes into this contained space. The work was originally conceived in 1972 for the UN Conference on the Human Environment and the video shows its final realisation in 2007 at the Sharjah Biennial 8.
