Harun Farocki: Public Programme

Alongside Three Early Films, an exhibition of selected early works by the renowned German filmmaker Harun Farocki (b.1944) which was held at Cubitt Gallery from 17 January through to 22 February (2009). Four public events were organised with the participation of Tom Holert, Marion von Osten, Harun Farocki and Lucy Reynolds.

PUBLIC EVENTS:

Education Image - Saturday 31 January 2009, 5:00PM to 7:00PM

Public Discussion at Cubitt with Tom Holert and curator Marion von Osten on their research project at the Akademie der bildenden Künste (Vienna), entitled the Education Image. Education Image explores the different ways in which pedagogy appears in visual culture and how, in turn, visual culture is used as an educative tool. This event was curated by Bart van der Heide, Antje Ehmann and Kodwo Eshun.

What Farocki Taught - Saturday 7 February 2009, 4:00PM to 6:00PM

A screening of What Farocki Taught (Jill Godmilow, 1998), with special introduction by Lucy Reynolds and synchronized screening of Inextinguishable Fire (Harun Farocki, 1969). This event was curated by Bart van der Heide, Antje Ehmann and Kodwo Eshun.

The Image of Violence - Thursday 19 February 2009, 7:00PM to 9:00PM

During this event acclaimed German filmmaker and artist, Harun Farocki, discussed his (then) work-in-progress, Immersion, with artist and critic Kodwo Eshun (co-founder of the Otolith Group). In Immersion, Farocki explores how virtual reality is deployed within a sobering military reality — how the artificial images of computer games are deployed beyond their self-contained fictional universes, both in the training of U.S. troops prior to their deployment to combat zones, and in psychological care for troops suffering battlefield trauma upon their return.

Presented in association with The Centre for the Production and Research of Documentary Film at the University of Westminster, and in collaboration with Michael Uwemedimo, Lecturer, School of Arts, Roehampton University.

This event was held at the Goethe-Institut London.
